I John Chapter Five

I Jn 5:1 Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God: and every one that loveth him that begat loveth him also that is begotten of him.

Again John is telling us that if we believe that Jesus is the Christ, that is the promised Messiah or Savior then we are born of God (His children). Now if we believe that Jesus is the Christ that means we must believe ALL the things said of Him in God's Word. We cannot believe that Jesus is the Christ and yet doubt the things said of Him. That kind of belief is IMPOSSIBLE.

And again, John is telling us that if we love Him that conceived us (reborn us) we will also love others whom He begot. (brothers in Christ).

I Jn 5:2 By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God, and keep his commandments.

Again-we keep His commandments in our hearts. We DESIRE to keep His commandments. The SPIRIT is willing but the FLESH is weak. If from our hearts we do not desire to keep His commandments we are none of His.

Matt 26:41 Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.

Mark 14:38 Watch ye and pray, lest ye enter into temptation. The spirit truly is ready, but the flesh is weak.

Notice the words ready and willing in these two verses. They are both the same Greek words. # 4289 I don't know why they are translated as different English words. I guess the spirit is ready & willing to keep God's commandments.

I Jn 5:3 For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.

The love of God is not love we FEEL in our hearts. It is not PHYSICAL love. The love of God is OBEDIENCE. And this obedience is not hard. His commandments are not burdensome. They are not troublesome and difficult. They are not oppressive. They are based, firmly established, grounded, and rooted on LOVE.

All of God's people are capable of LOVE as well as HATE. ALL of His people are capable of concern as well as indifference.

I Jn 5:4 For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.

EVERY child of God overcomes the world. Let us examine ourselves to see just how much of the world there is in us.. We must determine if the world has overcome us. Now WE do not overcome the world, it is OUR FAITH that does the jib.

I Jn 5:5 Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God?

Who overcomes the world? 1 John 5:4 says that God's children do. He says we do this by our faith. What faith is he talking about here? 1 John 5:5 identifies that faith. "… he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God?"

That's a commandment--believe-- is believing grievous?

I Jn 5:6 This is he that came by water and blood, even Jesus Christ; not by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit that beareth witness, because the Spirit is truth.

This verse takes some study. I believe this may mean that the "natural birth" come by water and the "spiritual birth" (born again) comes by blood. (Blood of Christ) Jesus came by water (born of a virgin) to come by blood. (Die in the cross) The third person of the Trinity testifies to these events of the second Person of the Trinity.. This testimony is by the Spirit of Truth.

I Jn 5:7 For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.

The Father, The Word, and the Holy Ghost. The Bible says in the beginning was the WORD, it doesn't say in the beginning was the SON. I believe the WORD became the SON when He was "born of water" to shed His blood.

These three confirm in heaven and verify that "Jesus is the Son of God"

The FATHER bears record by verses such as these.

At Jesus' baptism
Matt 17:5 While he yet spake, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them: and behold a voice out of the cloud, which said, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him.

At the Crucifixion
Matt 27:54 Now when the centurion, and they that were with him, watching Jesus, saw the earthquake, and those things that were done, they feared greatly, saying, Truly this was the Son of God.

The WORD bears witness that the WORD is the SON of God. He must bear witness to the human nature of the Word. He must bear witness to the man Christ Jesus, in and by whom he, the Word, redeemed and saved us.

John 1:14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

The WORD showed us the glory of the SON. The SON was transfigured on a mountain.

Matt 17:2 And was transfigured before them: and his face did shine as the sun, and his raiment was white as the light.

The HOLY GHOST bear witness by verses such as these.

Luke 1:35 And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.

Matt 12:28 But if I cast out devils by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God is come unto you.

Luke 3:22 And the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him, and a voice came from heaven, which said, Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased.

I Jn 5:8 And there are three that bear witness in earth, the spirit, and the water, and the blood: and these three agree in one.

Now there are three that bear record on earth. Flesh can only beget (sire-father) flesh and ALL flesh begotten of flesh is sinful.

Rom 8:8 So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.

1 Cor 15:50 Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; neither doth corruption inherit incorruption.

John 3:5-7 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.

Sinful flesh can only beget sinful flesh, as flesh can produce only after it's kind.

But the HOLY Spirit of God begets a HOLY Son in the LIKENESS of flesh.

The Spirit of Jesus bears record in that Jesus was sinless.

Rom 8:3 For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh:

The Spirit gives witness by coming to indwell believers and regenerating them.

WATER is what man identifies with cleanness. God created us to live in space and time and to see and understand things in a certain manner. Water is symbolic if cleanliness. Baptism by water is symbolic of cleanliness from the filth of sin. God always speaks in OUR language. He came to save us looking LIKE US. (In the flesh)

When Jesus was baptized, the Holy Ghost came to empower Him. The flesh of Jesus was "cleansed". Water, speaking to us in out language, testifies that Christ is PURE, CLEAN-SPOTLESS.

Then we have the testimony of BLOOD.

Heb 9:12 Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.

Heb 9:22 And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission.

I Jn 1:7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.

WATER the symbol of cleansing and BLOOD is the actual cleansing ingredient.

John 19:34 But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came there out blood and water.

Out came the cleansing power itself and the symbol of that cleansing power.

I Jn 5:9 If we receive the witness of men, the witness of God is greater: for this is the witness of God which he hath testified of his Son.

The witness of God of which John has just spoken of in verses 6-7 and 8.

I Jn 5:10 He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son.

We have the witness of GOD the FATHER, the WORD and the SPIRIT and of BLOOD and WATER and of the APOSTLES and of OURSELVES. The Spirit of Truth indwelling IN US is our witness.

I Jn 5:11 And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.

We have been talking about all these three's bearing witness along with the eyewitnesses and even ourselves. Now John tells us what this record is we witness, and he tells us where it can be found.

I Jn 5:12 He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.

Here he tells us AGAIN. Practice makes perfect. Repetitive teachings make for a sound pupil.

I Jn 5:13 These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.

These things, the WHOLE LETTER, was written for only ONE REASON. A record is given that people may believe on the Son of God and those that do can know that they have eternal life.

I Jn 5:14 And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us:

When Jesus taught us to pray, He told us to pray "thy will be done" on earth as it is in heaven. Here we are told to pray "according to his will".

I Jn 5:15 And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him.

We can know if He hears us if we know we pray according to His will, and if we know this we can know that we will have those prayers answered.

I Jn 5:16 If any man see his brother sin a sin which is not unto death, he shall ask, and he shall give him life for them that sin not unto death. There is a sin unto death: I do not say that he shall pray for it.

I believe that John is speaking of different kinds of sinning here. If we see our brother, a fellow saved person in sin, we should pray for him. We can apply "church discipline" against him.

Example.

1 Cor 5:1 It is reported commonly that there is fornication among you, and such fornication as is not so much as named among the Gentiles, that one should have his father's wife.

Paul has already taken action. and now he tells the church to do the same.

1 Cor 5:5 To deliver such an one unto Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus.

And now he tells the church to do the same.

1 Cor 5:11 But now I have written unto you not to keep company, if any man that is called a brother be a fornicator, or covetous, or an idolater, or a railer, or a drunkard, or an extortioner; with such an one no not to eat.

1 Cor 5:13 But them that are without God judgeth. Therefore put away from among yourselves that wicked person.

If the man repents he will be forgiven and he will live physically. This will be sin not unto death. He is called "brother" so he will not die spiritually.

But if he continues in sin that will be sin unto death and he will die physically. God will kill him and take him home.

I Jn 5:17 All unrighteousness is sin: and there is a sin not unto death.

John is careful in what he recommends. He does not forbid them to pray for such a fellow and he doesn't encourage it either. He says ALL unrighteousness is sin. He doesn't want to give them the impression that some sin (not unto death) is permissible while others (unto death) are not.

I Jn 5:18 We know that whosoever is born of God sinneth not; but he that is begotten of God keepeth himself, and that wicked one toucheth him not.

Whosoever is born of God does not sin HABITUALLY.

I Jn 5:19 And we know that we are of God, and the whole world lieth in wickedness.

We, a REMNANT are in Light while the WHOLE WORLD is in darkness.

I Jn 5:20 And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life.

John is emphasizing that GOD and JESUS CHRIST is TRUE.

I Jn 5:21 Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Amen.

Idols can mean much more than "false gods". A brother can have sports idols. He can have money or other things of this world for idols. Where your priorities are is where your heart is and that will be your idols.
