I John Chapter Four

I Jn 4:1 Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.

In the Charismatic movement today many people believe ALL the spirits as being from God because a man tells them so. God tells them all spirits are not from God and to try them but they believe a man over God.

How can we try these spirits? The Spirit of God speaks TRUTH. The Spirit of God will not contradict the Holy Scripture (Bible) The Holy Spirit of God will speak to you ONLY through God's Word as ALREADY given to us, and NOT some NEW, or ADDED revelation. The Word of God will not say something it hasn't said before. It will speak the same message all the way through the scripture. The Word of God is written in a Book. We need to know the whole books teachings to really understand scripture. The Word of God interprets, or explains the Word of God.

I Jn 4:2 Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God:

Now everybody knew that Jesus of Nazareth was a man "in the flesh". They worked with Him and talked with Him and ate with Him. What this means is that Jesus Chris is God in the flesh. This was the greatest issue of unbelief in those days. These days the spirit of antichrist issue is much more than just denying that Jesus Christ is God in the flesh.

I Jn 4:3 And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world.

You see, there were Christ deniers in the world even before Christ died and resurrected. The devil wastes no time in his battle against God.

I Jn 4:4 Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.

NOW--this is saying that the children of God have overcome the false prophets not the demonic force behind them.

He that is in us (Holy Spirit) is greater that he that is in the world. (Satan & his demons)

I Jn 4:5 They are of the world: therefore speak they of the world, and the world heareth them.

Another way to discern false spirits, and this method is very good for our day and time, is that we can listen to what they speak of, and who it is that hears them.

Remember we are not of this world. The churches are instituting worldly programs into the churches to entice the lost (world) into the churches and THIS is a false spirit.

A false spirit will speak in the world's medical terms to describe the sufferings of Christ because they cannot comprehend spiritual terms. Remember Jeff at Countryside Baptist Church speaking of this at Easter season in 1996?

The false spirit will use worldly programs to gain the attention of people. The church will offer worldly programs to make the people of the world comfortable in the church. You see, people are generally comfortable with things they are accustomed to.

I Jn 4:6 We are of God: he that knoweth God heareth us; he that is not of God heareth not us. Hereby know we the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error.

You wanna know how to identify the spirit of truth from the spirit of error? Hear a preacher or teacher that speaks from the Bible and whose teachings do not in any way deviate, diverge, alter, change, modify or differ from the Bible.

I Jn 4:7 Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God.

John says if you know God hear us (His teachers)

I Jn 4:8 He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.

Again--He that does not have love in his heart does not know God. Yes-God is a God of love and His children will be children of love. BUT-listen to THIS.

God loves TRUTH. All truth is of God. God magnifies His Word above His Name.

Ps 138:2 I will worship toward thy holy temple, and praise thy name for thy lovingkindness and for thy truth: for thou hast magnified (honor-exceeded-advanced-promoted) thy word above all thy name.

God's children will foremost love His Word above that of the children called by His Name.

I Jn 4:9 In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him.

How did God show His love for us? He sent His ONLY BEGOTTEN SON into the world so that HE could DIE so that WE could LIVE.

I Jn 4:10 Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.

John says, now THIS is LOVE. It is not OUR LOVE, but GOD'S LOVE. Our love cannot be compared to God's love. It is insignificant, minor, petty to God's love.

I Jn 4:11 Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another.

NOW--John says WE OUGHT to love one another, as if all of God's children do not love one another.

I Jn 4:12 No man hath seen God at any time. If we love one another, God dwelleth in us, and his love is perfected in us.

John says- HEY, the world has not seen God, and neither has His children. The ONLY way someone can SEE GOD is through the love His children have for one another.

We are to be the LIGHT of the world and this LIGHT is to be manifest in our love for each other.

Matt 5:14-16 Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

John 13:34-35 A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.

All men (the world) shall know we are of Christ by our love for one another. This is shining out LIGHT.

Here are some scriptures on out love for one another. Remember this love for one another is the LIGHT that the Bible speaks of that should be in us.

Do you say, listen, you have spoken on this dozens of times already? You keep repeating yourself. I say, yes I have, but I teach the Bible. GOD is saying this dozens of times. He wants us to get this doctrine through our heads. He wants this teaching to sink into our minds and our hearts.

You see, when something is REALLY important to God He spares no words in telling us. God repeats Himself too.

John 15:12 This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you.

John 15:17 These things I command you, that ye love one another.

Rom 13:8 Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law.

1Thes 4:9 But as touching brotherly love ye need not that I write unto you: for ye yourselves are taught of God to love one another.

1 Pet 1:22 Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned (real-earnest-heartfelt-sincere) love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently: (with all our might)

I Jn 3:11 For this is the message that ye heard from the beginning, that we should love one another.

I Jn 3:23 And this is his commandment, That we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandment.

II Jn 1:5 And now I beseech thee, lady, not as though I wrote a new commandment unto thee, but that which we had from the beginning, that we love one another.

I Jn 4:13 Hereby know we that we dwell in him, and he in us, because he hath given us of his Spirit.

I Jn 3:24 And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us.

What commandments are we to keep? See 1 John 3:23 and John 15:12 The Spirit He had given us is the Spirit of love of the Truth.

John 16:13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.

You see, God says if we love Him we will love each other.

John 14:15 If ye love me, keep my commandments.

Not THESE are the commandments.

Matt 22:37-40 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

He also says that HE IS TRUTH.. So, if we love God we love the Truth. And if we receive the Spirit of Truth then we receive the Spirit of love.

John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

John 14:23 Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.

What are His Words?

John 17:17 Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.

I Jn 4:14 And we have seen and do testify that the Father sent the Son to be the Saviour of the world.

John says, I am an eye witness. This is not just something I heard.

I Jn 4:15 Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God dwelleth in him, and he in God.

I Jn 4:16 And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him.

Many people think that a God of love cannot send anyone to hell, and that a God of love may be at times disappointed, but NEVER angry.

God is a God of love:
John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

BUT--listen to WHO will nor perish. "whosoever believeth in him" The O.T. has tens of dozens of verses speaking of God's anger.

People say that God loves the person, but hates the sin. Well- that's right. But unless that person separates from sin by coming to repentance before God and faith towards the Lord Jesus Christ, (Acts 20:21) God will throw that sin He hates into hell-- along with the person that the sin is in. How 'bout that?

I Jn 4:17 Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment: because as he is, so are we in this world.

I Jn 4:18 There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.

It is the love which God, who is love, has produced in us through regenerating us and placing His Spirit in us that we can have boldness in the Day of Judgment.

The believer who has perfected God's love in his earthly life will be able to approach the judgment seat of Christ without any shame. This assurance is not presumption, because as he is, so are we in this world.

How is God? God is a God of love, right? Now, as He is so are we while still in the world. We are children of love. There is no fault to be found in us in the eyes of God. We don't have to be afraid to stand before the throne of judgment.

When the Bible speaks of believers being like Him, it is speaking of our likeness in love.

I Jn 4:19 We love him, because he first loved us.

I Jn 4:20 If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen?

I Jn 4:21 And this commandment have we from him, That he who loveth God love his brother also.

This is something I never looked at real close. I have ALWAYS preached OBEDIENCE to God, but I never equated or identified this so close to the relation of LOVE.

Some people preach love, which will result in obedience, while some people preach love rather than obedience.

Some people preach that we should tolerate sin out of love. They preach that we should keep silent about warning of false teachers out of love. They say God will take care of that, but they forger that WE DO GOD'S WORK now that Jesus is ascended. WE are to take care of that, with the help of the Holy Spirit of God.

I believe there is a time to love and a time to be angry. I may sound angry most of the time and it is because I do not see much love that leads to obedience.

Listen- I melt in love when I see manifestation of repentance and love of God's Truth. You have seen me cry many times over TRUTH.
