II John

II John 1:1 The elder unto the elect lady and her children, whom I love in the truth; and not I only, but also all they that have known the truth;

John introduces himself as "the elder", not as an apostle. This is probably because he is writing a personal letter instead of a letter to a church.

II Jn 1:2 For the truth's sake, which dwelleth in us, and shall be with us for ever.

What truth dwelleth in us believers?

John 14:16-17 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever. Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.

John 15:26 But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me:

John 16:13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.

II Jn 1:3 Grace be with you, mercy, and peace, from God the Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of the Father, in truth and love.

Grace is with you, as well as peace and mercy. The Greek word eimi (i-mee'); means a "very positive" statement of something that has already happened. It is used hundreds of times in the NT. Always Positive. Example: For by grace are (eimi) ye saved.

II Jn 1:4 I rejoiced greatly that I found of thy children walking in truth, as we have received a commandment from the Father.

This ladies children-ALL of them, were walking in the Spirit of Truth. They have received (accepted) the commandment from God. And this is the commandment they accepted.

Rom 8:1 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

Rom 8:4 That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

Gal 5:16 This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.

Gal 6:16 And as many as walk according to this rule, peace be on them, and mercy, and upon the Israel (children) of God.

Peace and mercy are on them that walk after this rule. (see verse 3)

II Jn 1:5 And now I beseech (ask-desire) thee, lady, not as though I wrote a new commandment unto thee, but that which we had from the beginning, that we love one another.

This commandment was not given, or written by John. Jesus Christ gave it at the beginning of His ministry.

John 13:34 A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.

You may saw, we have always had this commandment, even in the O.T. NOT SO. We are to love one another as Jesus has loved us. HOW MUCH does He love us?

John 10:15 As the Father knoweth me, even so know I the Father: and I lay down my life for the sheep (children of God).

HOW MUCH are we then, to love?

John 15:13 Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.

I Jn 3:16 Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.

Now THIS is a new commandment, but this lady had it from the beginning she was saved.

II Jn 1:6 And this is love, that we walk after his commandments. This is the commandment, That, as ye have heard from the beginning, ye should walk in it.

We should walk after the commandment of LOVE. And THIS is the commandment of LOVE. That we walk after HIS commandments. And what are HIS commandments? We are to walk in OBEDIENCE to His commandments found in His Book, the Holy Bible.

In verse 5 the commandment is to love; in verse 6 love is obeying His commands.

It has been said that "love divorced from duty will run riot, and duty divorced form love will starve"

Love is divorced (loosed) from duty (keeping God's commandments) is running riot in the churches today. It is causing anarchy, which is "lawless" confusion. It is causing lawlessness to God's commandments People are told to love-love-love over and over again. No obedience is taught. The people are taught to not only LOVE the enemies of God but to FELLOWSHIP with them and call them BROTHERS IN CHRIST.

Love is not merely a matter of feeling; it is the action of doing the will of God.

II Jn 1:7 For many deceivers are entered into the world, who confess not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh. This is a deceiver and an antichrist.

THIS is going on in religious circles even more so today. GOD is preached in many places but JESUS is not. These deceivers in the churches preach LOVE without DUTY to God.(keeping His commandments) The emphasis (importance) is place on LOVE.

II Jn 1:8 Look to yourselves, that we lose not those things which we have wrought, but that we receive a full reward.

Take a close look at yourselves. Examine yourselves. The presence of heretical or false teaching calls for examination.

The danger is personal-internal: therefore, self-examination is called for.

2 Cor 13:5 Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates?

The danger is also external-can affect others. Therefore examination of the heretics is also called for.

Lack of examination will not relinquish our reward of salvation, but it will keep us from getting a FULL reward. Salvation being the MAIN reward, without which all other rewards are impossible, it is not the ONLY reward. There are other GREAT rewards awaiting those who live in obedience to Christ. (walk after the Spirit).

II Jn 1:9 Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God. He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son.

These deceivers in the churches today are not saved people. The churches here in the Hico community are not in the doctrine of Christ. They are in the doctrine of worldly seminary schools.

II Jn 1:10 If there come any unto you, and bring not this doctrine, receive him not into your house, neither bid him God speed:

These people are not to come to our church, even our house. We are not to tell them God speed or God bless you.

II Jn 1:11 For he that biddeth him God speed is partaker of his evil deeds.

Is we do this, that is, speak well of them, fellowship with them and ask God to bless them we are associates-partners in their sins.

II Jn 1:12 Having many things to write unto you, I would not write with paper and ink: but I trust to come unto you, and speak face to face, that our joy may be full.

This woman is special. She and ALL her children are walking in obedience to God. Not just SOME of her children. They are ALL walking in the Spirit of Truth.

II Jn 1:13 The children of thy elect sister greet thee. Amen.

Not only that. This woman has a saved sister whose children are doing the same. These two women would be CONCERNED and TALK to their children and SET THEM STRAIGHT if any was to do like some of mine do.

Now these two women were blessed in their children. And I believe THEY had a LOT to do with it. They didn't just leave "well enough alone". These two women loved their children with a GODLY love. To many people love their children with an EARTHLY love only.

Let us examine ourselves to see how do we love OUR children.
