Ephesians Chapter Three

Eph 3:1 For this cause I Paul, the prisoner of Jesus Christ for you Gentiles,

For the cause presented in chapter two.

Eph 2:11-13 Wherefore remember, that ye being in time past Gentiles in the flesh, who are called Uncircumcision by that which is called the Circumcision in the flesh made by hands; That at that time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world: But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ.

Eph 3:2 If ye have heard of the dispensation of the grace of God which is given me to you-ward.

If they have heard of the dispensation/stewardship. The message of grace was a sacred trust given to Paul in order that he might make it known among the Gentiles.

This would be more understandable if the verses were not separated so.

If you have heard of the stewardship given to me to pass on to you and how the mystery that I wrote to you about earlier; then when you read this letter you will understand that I came to this knowledge by “direct revelation” from the Lord Jesus Christ. (verses 2-4) That the Gentiles should be fellowheirs, and of the same body, and partakers of his promise in Christ by the gospel: (verse 6)

Eph 3:3 How that by revelation he made known unto me the mystery; (as I wrote afore in few words,

Eph 3:4 Whereby, when ye read, ye may understand my knowledge in the mystery of Christ)

Eph 3:5 Which in other ages was not made known unto the sons of men, as it is now revealed unto his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit;

Eph 3:6 That the Gentiles should be fellowheirs, and of the same body, and partakers of his promise in Christ by the gospel:

The mystery spoken of is a sacred secret that had not been previously revealed. The mystery was not that the Gentiles should be saved —there is much in the OT concerning the salvation of the Gentiles, particularly in Isaiah  (Isa 11:10;42:6;49:6;54:3;60:3)—but that they should be joined with Jews in one body.

Eph 3:7 Whereof I was made a minister, according to the gift of the grace of God given unto me by the effectual working of his power.

Paul, whereof; for whom (the Gentiles) was made a minister to them/Gentiles by the power of God, Who is capable of so doing

Eph 3:8 Unto me, who am less than the least of all saints, is this grace given, that I should preach among the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ;

Paul went from the persecutor of: the Church (least of all saints) to “persecuted for” the Church. The riches of Christ are past finding out for us. We only have a vague idea of His riches as revealed to us through God’s Holy Word/Bible. Example;1 Cor 2:9

Eph 3:9 And to make all men see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God, who created all things by Jesus Christ:

Paul is to tell the world the mystery of the Gentiles being grafted into the salvation of the Jews.  (John 4:22) The mystery that the Gentiles should be joined with Jews in one body.

Eph 3:10 To the intent that now unto the principalities and powers in heavenly places might be known by the church the manifold wisdom of God,

To the goal that through the Church the  “principalities and powers in heavenly places” (both good and evil angles) may be know the diverse/different (Jews & Gentiles) wisdom of God. (to make of twain/two ONE new man-Eph 2:15)

Eph 3:11 According to the eternal purpose which he purposed in Christ Jesus our Lord:

Paul is to make known the “eternal purpose” of the mystery.  From the beginning this was God’s plan to be accomplished by Christ Jesus

Eph 3:12 In whom we have boldness and access with confidence by the faith of him.

In Christ we have boldness to approach the Throne of God. (Heb 10:19)

Eph 3:13 Wherefore I desire that ye faint not at my tribulations for you, which is your glory.

Read what Paul told the elders of the Church in Ephesus in Acts 20:18-35.

Ephesus was in Asia and read about his tribulations in Asia. In 2 Cor 1:8-11.

Eph 3:14 For this cause I bow my knees unto the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,

Paul kneels to God in prayer for the Gentile saints in Ephesus

Eph 3:15 Of whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named,

The WHOLE family of the redeemed in Christ.  Those that have gone before us and those alive on earth today.

Eph 3:16 That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man;

Paul prays that God would strengthen with power by His Holy Spirit the personal-personality-center-heart of man.

Eph 3:17 That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love,

Paul prays for this strengthening so that Christ may dwell in our hearts and we be well-established-unshakeable and steady-fixed-immovable in love.

Eph 3:18 May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height;

Paul prays that we be able to understand the capacity, the space; the intensity and the peak of Christian Agape Love.

This love is ever growing and so we will never come to full knowledge of the breadth, and length, and depth, and height of this love.

Eph 3:19 And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God.

Paul prays that we know the love of Christ for us that surpasses our full knowledge.  It is essentially unknowable, yet we can know it enough to rejoice in it.

Eph 3:20 Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us,

Now unto God that is able to do a great deal MORE that we ask.  God has power to save us, and so He has power and then some, to do all we can think of.  The power that works “in” us is His Holy Spirit.

Eph 3:21 Unto him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end. Amen.

The Church established by Jesus Christ is the glory of Him Who has this exceeding abundantly power.  And how long is His glory to last? Throughout ETERNITY.
