A Study of Revelation - Part Two
(As taught by Andy Neckar at Community Bible Chapel-Hico, TX)

In chapter four John is taken to the third heaven and end-time revelation has began to be disclosed to John.

Rev 4:2-3 And immediately I was in the spirit: and, behold, a throne was set in heaven, and one sat on the throne. And he that sat was to look upon like a jasper (a transparent or clear stone)and a sardine (also translated "sardius" in Rev 21:20; any stone in red-to show blood) stone: and there was a rainbow round about the throne, in sight like unto an emerald. (green stone)

A rainbow is around the one on the throne that looks like three stones. Ezekiel saw something similar to what John saw when he got a vision of the third heaven.

Ezek 1:26-28 And above the firmament that was over their heads was the likeness of a throne, as the appearance of a sapphire stone: and upon the likeness of the throne was the likeness as the appearance of a man above upon it.thin it, from the appearance of his loins even upward, and from the appearance of his loins even downward, I saw as it were the appearance of fire, and it had brightness round about. As the appearance of the bow that is in the cloud in the day of rain, (rainbow) so was the appearance of the brightness round about. This was the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the LORD. And when I saw it, I fell upon my face, and I heard a voice of one that spake.

In the breastplate of the Israeli High Priest the first and last stones were the sardius and jasper

Exod 28:17-20 And thou shalt set in it settings of stones, even four rows of stones: the first (first stone-Alpha) row shall be a sardius, a topaz, and a carbuncle: this shall be the first row. And the second row shall be an emerald, a sapphire, and a diamond. And the third row a ligure, an agate, and an amethyst. And the fourth (-last stone-Omega) row a beryl, and an onyx, and a jasper: they shall be set in gold in their inclosings.

Alpha-sardus-a red stone-the blood of Christ
Omega-jasper-a clear stone. Clean-washed in the blood
The rainbow-God will no longer destroy sinful man. He will offer salvation to him.

Christ is the Alpha & Omega and His blood cleans believers from all sin; i.e. a clear-clean soul.

Rev 4:4 And round about the throne were four and twenty seats: and upon the seats I saw four and twenty elders sitting, clothed in white raiment; and they had on their heads crowns of gold.

Twenty four seats, or thrones and twenty four Elders around about the throne of God, representing the twelve tribes of Israel of the Old Testament and the twelve apostles of the New Testament.

Matt 19:28 And Jesus said unto them, Verily I say unto you, That ye which have followed me, in the regeneration when the Son of man shall sit in the throne of his glory, ye also shall sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.

Rev 4:5 And out of the throne proceeded lightnings and thunderings and voices: and there were seven lamps of fire burning before the throne, which are the seven Spirits of God.

Seven Spirits--a number representing "complete, or completion". It the Old Testament the number seven was the day of rest after creation was completed. The number seven was used as a completion of the sprinkling of blood for the sins of Israel. The number was used as seven days of consecration, and after that the consecration was "complete".

Seven churches--representing all the churches, and all the elders (seven angels) in the churches. Seven candlesticks representing the seven Spirits of God. A proof text that the seven churches represent ALL the churches throughout history.

Rev 3:1And unto the angel of the church in Sardis write; These things saith he that hath the seven Spirits of God, and the seven stars; I know thy works, that thou hast a name that thou livest, and art dead.

Jesus Christ has EVERYTHING. He has all the Spirit of God and all the universe.

It was Jesus Christ Himself that spoke to John that day. Jesus Christ is the WORD of God.

John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

John 1:14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

Jesus Christ was the Word of God that came in the flesh.

I Jn 5:7 For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.

This is the same as the father, the Son and the Holy Ghost.

John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

What is truth, but that found in the WORD,

This verse describes some of the characteristics of the Word of God.
Heb 4:12 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

Rev 1:10 I was in the Spirit on the Lord's day, and heard behind me a great voice, as of a trumpet,

Rev 2:12 And to the angel of the church in Pergamos write; These things saith he which hath the sharp sword with two edges;

John describes this person in Rev 1:13-15 and ends the description with this verse.
Rev 1:16 And he had in his right hand seven stars: and out of his mouth went a sharp twoedged sword: and his countenance was as the sun shineth in his strength.

So this great voice that spoke to John was Jesus Christ.

More on the number seven
Seven priests bearing seven trumpets were to encircle Jericho seven times blowing the trumpets seven times for seven days at which time the destruction of the city was to be "completed"

Matt 18:21-22 Then came Peter to him, and said, Lord, how oft shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? till seven times? Jesus saith unto him, I say not unto thee, Until seven times: but, Until seventy times seven.

"Complete" unending forgiveness. 10 x 7 x7.

The four beasts in verses Rev 4:7-9 are Cherubim. Read the description of these beasts (cherubim) in Rev 4:6-8 and living creatures (cherubim) Ezekiel 1:10

John describing the beasts
Rev 4:7 And the first beast was like a lion, and the second beast like a calf, (ox) and the third beast had a face as a man, and the fourth beast was like a flying eagle.

Ezekiel describing the living creatures.
Ezek 1:10 As for the likeness of their faces, they four had the face of a man, and the face of a lion, on the right side: and they four had the face of an ox on the left side; they four also had the face of an eagle.

The living creatures identified as cherubim.
Ezek 10:15 And the cherubims were lifted up. This is the living creature that I saw by the river of Chebar.

Ezek 10:20 This is the living creature that I saw under the God of Israel by the river of Chebar; and I knew that they were the cherubims.

One of the chief jobs of the Cherubim is GUARDS. They guarded the way to the tree of life in the Garden of Eden.

Gen 3:24 So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life.

Images of Cherubim guarded the mercy seat (throne of God) inside the holy of holyies in the tabernacle

Exod 25:18 And thou shalt make two cherubims of gold, of beaten work shalt thou make them, in the two ends of the mercy seat.

Exod 25:22 And there I will meet with thee, and I will commune with thee from above the mercy seat, from between the two cherubims which are upon the ark of the testimony, of all things which I will give thee in commandment unto the children of Israel.

Cherubim cover the throne of God in heaven
II Ki 19:15 And Hezekiah prayed before the LORD, and said, O LORD God of Israel, which dwellest between the cherubims, thou art the God, even thou alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth; thou hast made heaven and earth.

Ezek 10:1 Then I looked, and, behold, in the firmament that was above the head of the cherubims there appeared over them as it were a sapphire stone, as the appearance of the likeness of a throne.

I believe Satan (Lucifer) was a covering cherub. (Cherubim)

Although this was spoken against the king of Tyrus, it speaks of events that happened in heaven.
Ezek 28:13-17 Thou hast been in Eden the garden of God; every precious stone was thy covering, the sardius, topaz, and the diamond, the beryl, the onyx, and the jasper, the sapphire, the emerald, and the carbuncle, and gold: the workmanship of thy tabrets and of thy pipes was prepared in thee in the day that thou wast created. Thou art the anointed cherub that covereth; and I have set thee so: thou wast upon the holy mountain of God; thou hast walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire. Thou wast perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created, till iniquity was found in thee. By the multitude of thy merchandise they have filled the midst of thee with violence, and thou hast sinned: therefore I will cast thee as profane out of the mountain of God: and I will destroy thee, O covering cherub, from the midst of the stones of fire. Thine heart was lifted up because of thy beauty, thou hast corrupted thy wisdom by reason of thy brightness: I will cast thee to the ground, I will lay thee before kings, that they may behold thee.

This was spoken against the king of Babylon, but it too, refers to events that happened in heaven.
Isa 14:12-19 How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations! For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north: I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High. Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit. They that see thee shall narrowly look upon thee, and consider thee, saying, Is this the man that made the earth to tremble, that did shake kingdoms; That made the world as a wilderness, and destroyed the cities thereof; that opened not the house of his prisoners? All the kings of the nations, even all of them, lie in glory, every one in his own house. But thou art cast out of thy grave like an abominable branch, and as the raiment of those that are slain, thrust through with a sword, that go down to the stones of the pit; as a carcase trodden under feet.

Next study beginning in chapter five. The opening of the seven seals. The beginning of judgments. Christians are still here on earth. After the seven seals come the seven trumpets.
