The Gospel In A Nutshell
[Preached at Community Bible Chapel.  Hico, Texas]

John 3:16
There are many important chapters in the Bible. The first three chapters of Genesis are important, because from them we learn the answer to some important questions, how we got here, the fall and condition of man, and a pre-picture of a plan of God to rescue fallen man.

Psalm 23, is important to those needing comfort.

Romans 8, causes us to rejoice in great doctrines of God's Grace.

I Cor.15 gives us the hope of His Return and the Resurrection.

But the greatest verse in the Bible is John 3:16.

It is the Gospel in miniature. If the Bible were lost and only this verse was preserved, it would be enough to help men to God. It explains salvation.

This verse implies some great doctrines of the Christian Faith:

1-The Fact of God- His Sovereignty.  He alone has the right to make such a statement as found in this verse.
2-The Failure of Man- His Sin.
3-The Finality of Christ- Salvation. Only through Him is there salvation.
4-The Future Life- Serenity. [Eternal Life]. Severity. [Perish in a burning hell].

Let’s look at this great verse in a fourfold outline.

I. THE WORLD GOD LOVES.
Not the physical world, or the world of nature with its beauty. This is a world of PEOPLE, the highest order of creation in the world. God loves THEM

The world can be described with three words.

1.Depraved.  This is not merely a description of how deep in sin mankind is, but the inability of man to improve his condition with God. Isaiah cried,” Woe is me."

2-Deluded. This is because men are "spiritually blind."  The have a    "reprobate/degenerate-good for nothing mind" human view point thinking]

In religion.  The Lord's parents were three days journey out of Jerusalem before they discovered He was not in their midst. All religions are ignorant of the fact that Christ is the real object of faith

In politics.

In life generally. The future is sacrificed on the alter of the present to satisfy the flesh.

3. Doomed. Every picture given in the Bible of the closing days of this age is one of spiritual and moral doom. Man builds a civilization without God and all history testifies it is doomed.  II Thess. Chapter 2.

II. THE WAY GOD LOVES.  ["Gave His Only Begotten Son"]
I Jn 4:10 Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation (payment) for our sins.

Rom 5:8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

When Christ died, He suffered;
1-Physically.
John 19:1 Then Pilate therefore took Jesus, and scourged him

2-Mentally, anguish of soul.
Matt 27:46
And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?

3-In humiliation.
Heb 12:2
Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.

III. WHY GOD LOVES.

The Bible describes God as One Who loves and desires fellowship with man, but man is a fallen creature. God's holiness cannot tolerate sin, therefore, “Calvary.”

Christ died to:
1-Deliver men from sin.
Rom 6:22
But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life.

Tim 4:18 And the Lord shall deliver me from every evil work, and will preserve me unto his heavenly kingdom: to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.

2-Defeat an enemy, Satan.
John 16:33 These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.

3-Destroy an enemy, death.
1 Cor 15:55-57
O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory? The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

4-Defend the righteous at the judgment
Heb 8:1
Now of the things which we have spoken this is the sum: We have such an high priest, who is set on the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens;

Heb 7:26 For such an high priest became us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and made higher than the heavens;

I Jn 2:1 My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:

IV-WITNESSES TO GOD'S LOVE.

Acts 1:8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.

Acts 2:32 This Jesus hath God raised up, whereof we all are witnesses.
All believers are to bear witness to Jesus Christ because:

1-Only in Him is there forgiveness of sin.
Acts 10:43
To him give all the prophets witness, that through his name whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission of sins.

2-Only in Him is there the possibility of peace with God.
Rom 5:1
Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:

3-Only in Him is there hope beyond the grave.
Col 1:27 To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory:

Note this about the believer's witness:

1-It is worldwide in its scope/range.
The witness is to all men, everywhere, during all the church age.

Acts 1:8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.

2-It is personal in its application/use.
It is an individual matter. It has no stand-ins or substitutes.

To accomplish this witness about God's love to a lost world, it requires:

1-Compassionate praying:
Heb 13:3
Remember them that are in bonds, as bound with them; and them which suffer adversity, as being yourselves also in the body.

2-Consecrated funds.
2 Cor.8: 1-9. It is needful to give regularly, willingly, and in proportion. (a ratio of amount)

I call to your attention this verse in particular.
2 Cor 8:7 Therefore, as ye abound in every thing, in faith, and utterance, and knowledge, and in all diligence, and in your love to us, see that ye abound (be plentiful) in this grace also. (GIVING IN GRACE)

3-Committed lives.
2 Cor 8:5 And this they did, not as we hoped, but first gave their own selves to the Lord, and unto us by the will of God.

We first give OUR OWN SELVES to the Lord and then a PROPORTION OF OUR INCOME

If this world that God loves is reached with the message of His love, it will require more than the, "business as usual" attitude of the church.
